Nadia Wheatley discusses her new book Strange New World with cultural commentator Linda Jaivin. The work explores Bergen-Belsen’s first year after liberation in 1945, examining how survivors navigated life beyond the concentration camp. A survivor characterised this period as “more oppressive to our souls than the years in the hell of Auschwitz and Belsen,” highlighting the psychological challenges of displacement and bureaucratic struggles faced by 55,000 liberated prisoners.
