Ideas Exchange returns providing an opportunity for philosophical and ethical conversations between scholars, pioneering minds and the local community.

Join us as we unpack one of Australia’s most important foreign policy topics, our relationship with China. Is Australia’s relationship with China broken? What are the economic, social and political implications of the rising tensions between our two nations?

​Bill Birtles

Bill was the ABC’s China correspondent in Beijing from 2015 to 2020, his posting coming to a sudden end when he was rushed out of the country by Australian diplomats in an unprecedented diplomatic standoff. His book, The Truth About China: Propaganda, Patriotism and the Search for Answers ​was published in April 2021.

Linda Jaivin

Linda is the author of twelve books, including The Shortest History of China. She is also a novelist, essayist, cultural commentator and literary translator from Chinese, with a specialty in movie subtitling and co-editor of The China Story Yearbook, produced by the Australian Centre on China in the World at the ANU.

Professor Jing Han

Professor Jing Han is Director of the Australia-China Institute for Arts and Culture at the Western Sydney University and a leading expert in translating Chinese culture, intercultural communication, audiovisual translation and media accessibility. She is highly regarded for her significant and original contributions to the field and industry. Jing is also known for intercultural competence, strong leadership and innovative thinking.
